Community Kōrero - Circus Education in Aotearoa

Nic Davies will be hosting this event, with support from Tania Whetu at Circus Kumarani. Our guest speakers will provide a brief update on their individual projects, followed by a half hour window for the community to ask questions and provide feedback on the projects. 

Our aim is for this kōrero to lead onto further opportunities for those wanting to be involved in supporting the development of tertiary circus qualifications in Aotearoa.

Nic Davies. Steering Committee, ANZCA.

Nic will introduce the work ANZCA has been doing in advocacy for tertiary education in New Zealand, including sharing some of the findings from the ‘graduate profile’ questionnaire sent out to industry graduates including recommendations for future courses. 

Natasha van Etten. School Manager, Te Kura Maninirau.

A new kaupapa māori circus kura being established by Te Pou theatre and The Dust Palace. Natasha will be sharing an update on how the new program is going, and Te Kura Maninirau’s aims for the future of circus education in Aotearoa.  https://www.tekuramaninirau.nz

Jenny Ritchie. General Board Member, MOVE.

Jenny will be sharing an update on the $7 million MOVE center due to open at the Parakiore Recreation and Sports Centre. Jenny is involved in venue fit out, programme development and health and safety. https://uat.ccc.govt.nz/rec-and-sport/projects/parakiore/

Rosalie Ducharme. General Manager, The Wellington Circus Hub.

Rosalie will speak to the Hub's application for a tertiary degree, and the education resources still in the Wellington region after the closing of Whitireia's circus qualification. https://www.circus.org.nz/

Simona Jobbagy. Director & James Brown. Head of Circus Studies, National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA), Australia.

Simona and James will be updating the country on the possibility of NICA being able to offer a certificate 3 or 4 in Circus Arts in New Zealand. https://www.nica.com.au/

Mary-Jane Duffy. Te Ringa Hanga | Qualifications Development Facilitator, Toi Mai.

Toi Mai Workforce Development Council is in the process of planning for workforce development for the performing arts sector including reviewing the performing arts qualifications. Mary-Jane will talk about both of these things in relation to circus, as well as seeking feedback on circus qualifications.
